Ma'at was the Ancient Egyptian concept of truth, law, morality, and justice. Regulating the stars, seasons, and the actions of both mortals and the deities, it was Ma'at who set the order of the universe from chaos at the moment of creation. After her role in creation and continuously preventing the universe from returning to chaos, her primary role in Egyptian mythology dealt with the weighing of souls that took place in the underworld, Duat. The weight of a single feather from Ma'at was the measure that determined whether the souls (considered to reside in the heart) of the departed would reach the afterlife successfully or dwell forever in the underworld. This beautiful statue of Ma'at is hand painted in black and gold and made of a sturdy cold-cast resin. Standing 8 3/4" tall, with a 10" wingspan from tip to tip, Ma'at wears a richly patterned golden dress and a single ostrich feather in her hair.
